SCAC Volleyball; Colorado College and Trinity Move onto the National Quarterfinals

For the first time in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference history the conference will be represented by two teams in the National Quarterfinals with Colorado College and Trinity advancing.

Colorado College earned the number one seed in the West region and defeated Cal Lutheran and University of La Verne both in five games. After winning their first ever regional title in school history Colorado College will face Washington University Thursday at 12:30.

Trinity defeated Randolph-Macon, Emory and SCAC Champion Southwestern in route to their fifth regional title in the last 25 years. Trinity will face Juniata Thursday at 5:30.

SCAC Director of Communications Russell Kramer had a chance to catch up with both coaches and talk to them about their regional titles and preparation heading into this weekends National Quarterfinals.

SCAC Volleyball in the 2009 NCAA Tournament


The 2009 NCAA Volleyball Tournament begins tomorrow with two of the three SCAC teams in action. Southwestern University (33-3), the SCAC champion and winners of 31 consecutive matches, will serve as one of eight regional host sites. The Pirates open South Region play against University of Dallas (20-19) while Trinity University (27-11) - also in the South Region - plays Randolph-Macon (28-6) in the first round.

Colorado College (33-4) received a first-round bye in the West Region and will play the winner of Cal Lutheran (20-11) and Puget Sound (18-6) in second round play.

SCAC Director of Communication Russell Kramer had the chance to speak with all three head coaches as they prepare for the NCAA Tournament.

2009 SCAC Field Hockey Chmapionships - Rhodes Claims Third Title Since 2004


Rhodes College claimed its third SCAC Field Hockey Championship since 2004 with a 2-1 OT win over DePauw Sunday afternoon from Conway, Arkansas.

The Lynx who took a 1-0 lead off of a Libby Jones goal gave up a late goal to DePauw sending the game into overtime. Just 51 seconds into overtime junior Lindsey Gurkovich, who set up the first goal for the Lynx with an assist, put the game winning goal away off of a Charlie Wagner assist.

After the match SCAC Commissioner Dwayne Hanberry caught up with Rhodes head coach Jane Wells, junior Lindsey Gurkovich and sophomore Libby Jones.

2009 SCAC Field Hockey Championships - Semi-Final Saturday


On Saturday at the 2009 SCAC Field Hockey Championships, Rhodes defeated Sewanee 2-1 in OT while DePauw got past Centre 2-0 in regulation.

After the Rhodes match, SCAC Commissioner Dwayne Hanberry caught up with Rhodes head coach Jane Wells and junior Charlie Wagner.

At the conclusion of the DePauw match Commissioner Hanberry spoke with DePauw head coach Gina Preston and senior Sarah Riffle.

Southwestern University Wins Fourth SCAC Volleyball Championship


The No. 1 seeded Southwestern University Pirates defeated second seeded Colorado College 3-1 on Saturday evening - earning the Pirates their fourth Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and first since a co-championship with Trinity University in 2005.

Southwestern won by scores of 25-23, 19-25, 25-15 and 25-23. Southwestern advanced to the championship by beating rival and defending SCAC champion Trinity in the semifinals, by the same 3-1 margin.

By winning the SCAC championship, the Pirates earn the conference's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship. Southwestern, ranked 12th in the nation and winner of 31 consecutive matches, will learn of its national tournament destination on Monday when the brackets are released.

Colorado College, ranked 13th in the nation, advanced to its first SCAC championship by beating third seeded and 24th in the nation DePauw University. The Colorado Tigers won a thriller, topping the Indiana Tigers in five sets, 3-2.

Trinity Claims Third Place at 2009 SCAC Volleyball Championships

In the third place match at the 2009 SCAC Volleyball Championship Trinity defeated DePauw in straight sets 3-0 Saturday afternoon. After both teams fell in tough five set matches in the semi-finals earlier in the day Trinity and DePauw bounced back to face off against each other in the third place match.

With the loss DePauw finishes the regular season with a overall record of 28-9 and is still hopeful to continue to play more volleyball this year with an invitation to the National Tournament.

Trinity was led in the match by Alexis Edwards who posted 18 digs in the match and was named to the 2009 SCAC All-Tournament Team. The win improves Trinity to 27-11 on the year.

The first day of the 2009 SCAC Volleyball Championships is winding down with only one match left to in the nightcap featuring Oglethorpe vs. Colorado College. In the fourth and fifth matches of the day, Southwestern and DePauw both won in four matches advancing to the semi-finals tomorrow over Rhodes and Centre respectively.
