Water Colors Gold and White; Centre Women Sweep Relays with 400-Yard Freestyle Win

For only the second time in the history of the SCAC one school has swept every single relay event. It started Wednesday night in the 200-yard free and end Saturday night with the 400-yard free as Centre posted yet again another SCAC record.

Collen Maggard, Lis Starr, Sadie Allen and Meredith Angel in a time of 3:31.82 set a new conference record and swam the fourth fastest time in division three this year. The Colonels of Centre won every single relay event this week at the championships including three SCAC Championships meet records in the 200-yard free, 400-yard medley and finally the 400-yard free.

After the meet the girls had a chance to talk about their record setting swim.

SCAC 2009 Championships Day 4 - Finals

DePauw's Stier and Trinity's Miranda Break Through for 200-Yard Butterfly Titles

DePauw's Amanda Stier became the first ever four time winner of the women's 200-yard fly Saturday evening with a time of 2:06.99. The senior from Springboro, Ohio who already owned the record in the 200-yard fly now claims the top three times ever in the history of the SCAC. Stier who finised a close second in the 200-yard IM and 100-yard fly to Centre's Lis Starr was able to out touch Starr in the 200-yard fly.

The four time winner of the 200-yard fly had a chance to talk about her swim after the race.

For the men, Alex Miranda of Trinity set a new SCAC record in the 200-yard fly with a time of 1:51.76. Miranda, a freshman from Upper Arlington, Ohio continued the sucess for the Tigers in this event as they have now won seven of the last eight years. Alex who was the winner of the men's 500-yard freestyle on Thursday night talked about his swim after the meet.

Catie Baker; 2009 SCAC 200-Yard Breaststroke Champion

Catie Baker, a freshman from DePauw, won the 200-yard breaststroke in a lightning fast time of 2:22.01. Baker's time was good enough for a new SCAC record in fact the top three finishers in the event broke the previous record which was set back in 2003. A native from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Baker had shoulder surgery earlier in the year has been limited to time in the pool all season while recovering. After the race, Catie talked about her swim.

Southwestern's Thompson and DePauw's Boehme Cruise to 200-Yard Backstroke Victory

Southwestern's Bailey Thompson in the third fastest ever at the SCAC Championships, 2:08.26 took first in the women's 200-yard back on Saturday night. Thompson, a sophomore, finished second as a freshman last year in the 200-yard backstroke to All-American Katie Doogan became the first ever swimmer from Southwestern to win this event.

Thompson, a Garland, Texas native spoke about her swim after the race.


For the second year in a row, DuPauw junior Charlie Boehme took home the top honor in the men's 200-yard backstroke thsi year in a time of 1:54.94. Just the third person in the history of the SCAC to win this event in consecutive years will have a chacne next year to become the first ever three time winner in the 200-yard back. Boehme who jumped in the pool just after his sister Callie won the women's 1650-yard freestyle had a chacne to talk about his race just after stepping of the podium.

Freshman Andrew Battles of Trinity Shatters SCAC 1650-Yard Freestyle Record

Andrew Battles competing in his first ever SCAC Championships meet shattered a record that had stood since 2001 set by former Trinity swimmer Ryan Van Der Kar. Battles who swam the 1650-yard free in 15:56.95 broke the previous record by over 15 seconds. A native of Colleyville, Texas, Battles became the first swimmer from Trinity to win this event since 2005.

The freshman spoke about his mile long race after cooling down in the lap pool.

A Mile Later, Boehme Still the 1650-Yard Freestyle Champion

For the second consecutive year Callie Boehme won the 1650-yard free in record time. Last year as a freshman Boehme set a new SCAC Championships record only to break it as a sophomore by more than 15 seconds in a time of 17:22.09.

Boehme finishes the 2009 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships with three individual titles and two SCAC records. On Thursday night Callie won the 500-yard free in record time followed by the 400-yard IM Friday night before capping her meet off tonight. Callie had a chance to talk about her race as well as her performance overall earlier this evening.

Hayes Sweeps Men's Diving Events at 2009 SCAC Championships

Junior Hunter Hayes of Centre College capped off the sweep of the men's diving events at the 2009 SCAC Championships with a win in the 1-meter diving competition. Hayes posted the third highest score in SCAC history with a 476.55. The Hopkinsville, Kentucky native followed the standard of sweeping the diving events for the men, in the 10 year history of the championships only once has there not been a sweep of the events.

Hayes talked about his performance tonight just before the final session of the 2009 swimming meet began.

Three Time All-American and DePauw Graduate Katie Doogan Takes in 2009 Championships

With records falling at unprecedented rates at this year's championship meet, any mark set prior to Nashville is at risk of being bested, if not destroyed.

Few in the history of SCAC swimming can provide more insight into what it takes to perform at such elite levels than 2008 DePauw University graduate Katie Doogan.

Before the 2009 Championships began, Doogan held three individual SCAC records in the 200-yard IM, 400-yard IM and the 200-yard backstroke. Thursday night Lis Starr of Centre broke her 200-yard IM record in a time of 2:06.36 (Listen to Starr).

However Doogan still holds two individual records. Her 400-yard IM time held up Friday night as former teammate Callie Boehme, who finished second to Doogan in 2008, won in 2009 but was not able to break her record. Tonight another Doogan record will be on the line in the 200-yard backstroke - a record she set back in 2005 in a time of 2:06.35.

Doogan, a three-time conference Swimmer of the Year and the 2008 SCAC Woman of the Year, still resides in Greencastle, Ind., as an employee of DePauw - working in the department of fundrasing at the University.

A native of Troy, Michigan, Doogan was a three-time all-American at DePauw and won 10 individual SCAC swimming titles during her four-year career (tied for second all-time and just one shy of the record 11 held by Jane H. Champman of Sewanee).

Take Your Mark - Images of Day 4 Prelims 2009 SCAC Championships

The final day of competition is off and running at the 2009 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships from Tracy Caulkins Competition Pool in Nashville, Tennessee. This morning saw the men's and women's prelim heats in the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard butterfly. The Centre of Attention; Colonel Women Continue to Dominate Relays

Three new faces appeared atop the awards' stand, but the school name they represented remained the same as it had for every other women's relay during this meet.

The Centre College women's 800-yard freestyle relay team - Amber Lyvers, Trinity Hochstetler, Sadie Allen and Lauren Gates - swam the second-fastest time in SCAC championships meet history, winning the event in a finishing time of 7:55.70. Gates also swam on Centre's top-finishing 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay teams.

It is the first time Centre has ever won the women's 800 freestyle relay since the championships began in 1999.

DePauw Shatters 800-Yard Freestyle Relay Record

In the nightcap of day three the DePauw men did not disappoint. Josh Baugh, John Montgomery, Charlie Boehme and John Cook turned in the fourth-fastest 800-yard freestyle relay in Division III this year with a time of 6:48.21 - breaking the previous SCAC record that had stood since 2001 by nearly six seconds. DePauw, who won the 200-yard free Thursday night, will look to make it a sweep in the freestyle relays Saturday night in the final event of the 2009 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships in the 400-yard free.
