Underclassmen Shine as Centre's Maggard and Rhodes' Wagstaff Take Home 100-Yard Backstroke Honors

Freshman Collen Maggard of Centre College took home the 100-yard backstroke title tonight in record fashion in a time of 58.13. Maggard, a native of Paris, Kentucky, became the first swimmer from Centre to win this event. The freshman, who was also a part of the record-breaking 200-yard medley relay team earlier in the evening, became the third individual from that team to also post an individual event win on Friday evening - and all in record breaking form. Collen, who broke the record that had been set earlier in the day during the prelims, talked about her swim after the race.

Sophomore Drew Wagstaff of Rhodes College was crowned 100-yard backstroke champion, finishing in a time of 52.27. The Slidell, Louisiana native became the second swimmer from Rhodes to win this event. Wagstaff, who swam the fourth-fastest time in SCAC championship event history, will still have two more shots at setting his own record. The sophomore had a chance to talk about his swim after stepping down from the podium.

A Cut Above; Centre's Angel and DePauw's DeGeus are Crowned 100-Yard Breaststroke Champions

It was a swim that capped off yet another unforgettable night for Centre junior swimmer Meredith Angel. Less than two hours after Angel was a part of a the record-breaking 200-yard medley relay team, she was crowned the 100-yard breaststroke champion - breaking yet another SCAC record. Angel swam in a time of 1:04.20 - an NCAA "A-Cut" time which automatically qualifies the junior for nationals. A nearly speechless Angel had a chance to reflect on her accomplishment after the race.


As for the men's race it was Dan DeGeus of DePauw who was able to come away with the title. DeGeus, a junior from Edmond, Oklahoma, was the first swimmer from DePauw to ever take home the honor in this event. Dan, who swan a 57.73, was able to reflect on his swim after the race.

Carrier and Cook of Southwestern and DePauw Sail to 200-Yard Freestyle Titles

Jessie Carrier of Southwestern took the 200-yard freestyle tonight with a swim of 1:55.87. Carrier, a senior from Victoria, Texas, is the first swimmer from Southwestern to win this event. A very happy Carrier had a chance to talk about her swim after the race.


John Cook took off the blocks in lane six and finished the 200-yard freestyle in first place. The DePauw junior continued to show out - setting yet another SCAC record in a time of 1:39.45. The previous record of 1:41.22 had stood since 2001. Cook, who won the 200-yard free his freshman year, finished second a year ago but tonight became just the second two-time winner of the event. A native of Leawood, Kansas, Cook made it a goal to swim the 200-yard free in under 1:40 and had the chance to talk about race.

Centre's Starr and Colorado College's Barton Fly to 100-Yard Butterfly Honors

Lis Starr, a senior from Omaha, Nebraska, set a new SCAC Championships record in a time of 56.32 on her way to the 100-yard butterfly title. Starr, who won this same event her freshman and sophomore years, finished third at last year's meet as a junior. With the win, Lis became the first-ever three-time winner in the women's 100-yard butterfly. To listen to her reaction, click here.



Freshman Connor Barton swam the second fastest ever 100-yard butterfly in the history of the SCAC in a time of 50.11 - just seven tenths off setting a new conference standard. Barton, who is a freshman from Salt Lake City, Utah, became the first-ever swimmer from Colorado College to win this event. For Barton's reaction, click here.

All in the Family; Boehme Siblings Take Home Men's and Women's 400 IM Honors

For the first time in SCAC Swimming Championship history a pair of siblings took home first place in the same event. DePauw's Callie and Charlie Boehme, brother and sister from Germantown, Tennessee, finished first in the women's and men's 400 IM respectivly.

Callie, a sophomore, won the race in a time of 4:34.21. As a freshman Callie finished second to three-time All-American Katie Doogan who was at Tracy Caulkins Competition Pool to take in the SCAC Championships swimming action.

Charlie, the older brother of Callie, finished first in the 400-yard IM for the second year in a row. In a dual interview together the siblings had a chance to talk about their accomplishment.

Centre Makes a Splash in the 200-Yard Medley Relay

Centre College swept the women's and men's 200-yard medley relay less than 24 hours after sweeping the 400-yard medley realy. It was only the second time in the hostory of the SCAC swimming and diving championships that one school was able to sweep both the 200 and 400-yard medley relays. DePauw was the first back in 2007.

The men's relay team composed of Aaron Edwards, Brad Erickson, Hunter Owen and Jimmy Tatgenhorst swam the event in a record time of 1:33.54 - a record that had stood since Trinity swam a 1:34.69 in 2001. It was the first time in school history that Centre won the 200-yard medley relay. The men of Danville had a chance to talk about their record setting swim after the race.

For the women it was Collen Maggard, Caitlin Rhodes, Lis Starr and Meredith Angel who continued the dominant relay performance that Centre has displayed the entire meet. The Colonels swam the 200-yard medley in a record time of 1:46.17. Like the men, this was the first-ever Centre team to finish first in the event. Centre, who had finished second in this event the past two years, had the chance to talk about the race after receiving their first place medals.

SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships - Day 3, Finals

The second full day of competition has wrapped up and there has been no let down to the 2009 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships at Tracy Caulking Competition Pool in Nashville, Tennessee. SEVEN new swimming records were set on an evening filled with a number of electric moments. Enjoy the memorable moments from the finals of Day 3.

Trinity's Emerick Sweeps Women's Diving with Record Breaking 3-Meter Performance

Hayley Emerick, a sophomore from Portland, Texas for the second year in a row swept the women's diving events after her record breaking performance this afternoon at Tracy Caulkins Pool in Nashville, Tennessee. Emerick who just two days earlier won the 1-meter diving championship took home the 3-meter event this afternoon with an SCAC record score of 530.40.

The Trinity sophomore broke her own record which she set as a freshman had a chacne to talk about her 3-meter performance this afternoon.

2009 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships - Day 3, Heat 2

Day three is underway at the 2009 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships in Nashville, Tennessee from Tracy Caulkins Competition Pool. This morning saw the prelims for the men's and women's 400 IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke and 800-yard freestyle relay. Centre Stage, Colonels Take First in both Men's and Women's 400 Medley Relay

For only the third time in the history of the SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships, the 400 Medley Relay was swept by one school.

As for the men, it was the second year in a row that Centre was able to take home the title. Brad Erickson, Stewart Lowery, Hunter Owen and Jimmy Tatgenhorst swam the second fastest time ever at the championships in a time of 3:27.48 just .16 off setting a new record. It was only the second time that a school has been able to repeat in the 400 medley realy at the SCAC Championships.

Tatgenhorst and the troops talked after the race just how special this win was.

On the women's side Meredith Angel, Lauren Gates, Collen Maggard and Lis Starr shatterd the previous SCAC Championships record by more than seven seconds in a time of 3:51.47. It was another first for Centre as this was the first ever 400 medley relay team that was able to capture the title.

A team who had finished in the top three in this event the previous three years had a chance to talk about what this race ment to them.

Lightning in a Bottle, Centre's Angel and DePauw's Cook Finish First in the Women's and Men's 50-Yard Freestyle

In a matter of seconds it was over but as the water began to calm down Meredith Angel was once again the champion of the 50-yard freestyle. The Centre College junior has now won this event three straight times and is the only swimmer to do so. Angel who is a Kentucky native can now claim three of the top four all time SCAC Championships times including the fastest of all time which she swam tonight in a time of 23.42.

Angel who was a part of the 200-yard freestyle team, talked about her record breaking performance.

Junior swimmer John Cook of DePauw broke one of the oldest SCAC Championships records tonight as he swam the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 20.51. Cook who hails from Leawood, Kansas broke the previous mark that had been set by Chuck Seymour of Sewanee back in 2000.

Cook, who had finished second behind teammate and four time winner of this even Robert Alexander the previous two years talked about what it felt like to finally break into the top spot.

Centre's Starr and DePauw's Baugh Race to Women's and Men's 200-Yard Individual Medley

It was the final time that Lis Starr would ever race for the 200-yard IM SCAC Championship and the senior took advantage of the big stage winning in a time of 2:06.36. It was the first time in the history of the SCAC championships that a women from Centre took first place in the 200-yard IM. Once again it was another SCAC Championships record that was broken as Starr swam past the field and into the record book breaking the previous record of four time 200-yard IM champion Katie Doogan of DePauw.

Starr who has finished second twice in this event earlier in her career talked about her race.


Sophomore Josh Baugh from Frankfort, Indiana won the men's 200-yard IM in SCAC Championships record time of 1:54.54. It was the first time since 2005 that a swimmer from DePauw took home this title. Baugh who was also apart of the record breaking 200-yard freestyle team now has two first place finishes on the evening.
