SCAC Interactive - Teeing off with Oglethorpe University, the 2009 National Champions of Golf

With a final-round 289, the Oglethorpe University men's golf team earned the school's first-ever national title, winning the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship Saturday afternoon at the PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Oglethorpe, which started the day in second place and four shots from third-round leader Methodist University, finished four shots clear of University of La Verne and seven shots better than Methodist. The Petrels shot a four-day total of 12 over par 1164.

The national championship is the sixth for an SCAC team and the first since DePauw University won the 2007 Division III Women's Basketball Championship.

Just a week after its National Championship head coach Jim Owen, Senior Hap Kaufold and Junior Scott Pugh all had the chance to reflect on the weekend.

SCAC Interactive - Chrys Jones, Centre's National Champion

Chrys Jones of Centre College set a new Don Drumm Stadium record with his winning triple jump at the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The individual national title is the 19th all-time for a SCAC student-athlete and third this year.

Jones, a sophomore from Harrodsburg, Ky., jumped 50 feet, 3 1/4 inches to earn the national title in the event, the first-ever for a Centre College student-athlete. He is the first male SCAC student-athlete to win a national title at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships since Rose-Hulman's Chris Trapp won back-to-back-to-back javelin titles from 1984-1986.

The sophomore sensation had the chance to talk with the SCAC's Russell Kramer last week about his experience at NCAAs, what being a national champion meant to him and about some of his talents off the track.

DePauw Crowned SCAC Men's Tennis Champion for Third Straight Year

The 13th-ranked Tigers defeated 14th-ranked Trinity, 6-3, and captured their third straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title and the conference's automatic qualification into the NCAA Division III Championship.
DePauw took a 2-1 lead with wins at second and third doubles and then won the match with singles victories at the number two through five slots.

With the win, DePauw improved to 21-3 for its third 20-win season in the last four seasons, while Trinity dropped to 13-8. The match marked the seventh straight year the two squads battled for the conference title.

Oglethorpe Wins Second Straight SCAC Men's Golf Championship

The Oglethorpe University men repeated as conference champions at the 2009 SCAC Golf Championships which concluded on Sunday at Tunica National Golf Course.
Oglethorpe shot a team score of 920 to win by seven shots while holding off a furious finish from Rhodes College. The Lynx finished with a team score of 927 after a tournament-best round of 300 on Sunday.

Oglethorpe's Scott Pugh, a junior from Harrisburg, Pa., fired a final round 74 to win the men's individual medalist race by a stroke over Rhodes College's Bill Bazzel. Pugh finished the tournament with a three-day total of 225. Joining Pugh on the 2009 All-SCAC team from Oglethorpe were teammates Colin Chapman, Olafur Loftsson and Hap Kaufold.

The conference championship is the eighth for Oglethorpe, tying the Petrels with Rhodes for second on the CAC/SCAC all-time men's golf titles list. Sewanee has won 13 men's golf championships, but just one in the SCAC era (1992-forward). In the SCAC era, Oglethorpe has more than twice as many conference titles in men's golf than the next closest school (Trinity with three).

Southwestern Claims Third Staright SCAC Women's Golf Championship

The Southwestern University women made it three straight conference titles at the 2009 SCAC Golf Championships which concluded on Sunday at Tunica National Golf Course.
The Pirates cruised to a 72-shot win, the second-largest margin of victory in SCAC women's championships history.

Southwestern's Marisa Mauldin, a senior from Utopia, Texas, fired a a three-day total of 233 to win her third consecutive SCAC Women's Golfer of the Year honor. Mauldin becomes the second player in league history to accomplish the individual three-peat, following Sarah Gates of DePauw University who finished atop the leaderboard at the 2004, 2005 and 2006 championships.

After the third round concluded SCAC Commisoner Dwayne Hanberry spoke with SCAC Women's Golfer of the Year Marisa Mauldin as well as Southwestern head coach Dan Ruyle.

Hendrix Claims First Ever SCAC Baseball Championship

Hendrix First-year pitcher Caleb Schallawitz held a powerful Trinity offense to one run on only three hits and struck out two in an 11-1 eight inning victory that gave the Hendrix College Warriors its first ever SCAC baseball championship and the school's first men's SCAC championship in any sport.

The Warriors went through the tournament undefeated and earn the SCAC's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.Schallawitz dominated a Tiger offense that totaled 68 hits and averaged 12 runs per game in its four previous SCAC Tournament games. The Warriors pounded out 18 hits, which included at least one hit by everyone in the lineup, and did most of its damage thanks to a four run third inning and a four run fourth inning. Hendrix's No. 1-6 hitters went a combinded 13-23 (.565) and drove in eight of the teams' 11 runs. Warriors right fielder Nathan Harr went 3-for-4 with a run scored and drove in two runs. Teammate Daniel Ward went 1-for-3 highlighted by his two run home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth. Ward finished the day with two runs scored and two RBI.

Trinity center fielder Dylan Eaarly drove in the lone Tigers' run with a solo home run to right field in the top of the fifth inning. Eaarly finished the day 1-for-3 with a run scored and drove in a run.

Hendrix improved to 22-21 on the season as the Warriors will wait for its draw in the NCAA Division III regionals, which will be announced Sunday May 5 or Monday May 6. Trinity finished its season at 24-21.

After the game the SCACs Jeff DeBaldo caught up with the head coach of the Warriors R.J. Thomas and all four seniors on the Hendrix roster.

DePauw Claims Second Straight SCAC Softball Championship

The DePauw Tigers won their second straight SCAC Softball Championship this afternoon from the campus of Trinity University 8-0 over Rhodes.

DePauw jumped out early on the Lynx with a two run bottom of the first inning and never looked backed handing the ball off to junior pitcher Megan Soultz. Soultz, a Carmel, Ind native, picked up her third win of the tournament and her 23rd of the year pitching five shutout innings giving up just one hit.

Rhodes finished its season with a school record 29 wins and returns all of its players next year with no seniors on the roster.

DePauw will represent the SCAC as the AQ in the NCAA Softball Tournament which the DU Tigers have been selected to host a regional.

DePauw claimed its second straight SCAC Softball Championship today with its 8-0 victory over Rhodes. The Tigers improved to 26-7 on the year and will represent the SCAC as the AQ in the NCAA Tournament.

2009 SCAC Track and Field Championships

What a weekend it was on the Mountain. The 2009 SCAC Men's and Women's Track and Field Championships concluded on Saturday at Sewanee with the Rhodes College women and the Trinity University men claiming team titles.

For the Rhodes women, it was their second consecutive title while the Trinity men laid claim to their third straight championship.

After the dust had cleared, SCAC Commissioner Dwayne Hanberry caught up with some of the central figures involved in Saturday's championship event.

Trinity University's Todd Wildman, the SCAC Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Year, talked about the expectations entering this year's event after winning an individual national championship during the indoor season, and Rhodes College's Kristen Forbes, the SCAC Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Year, talks about what it took for her team to repeat as conference champion as well as her personal quest to repeat as conference Athlete of the Year.

2009 SCAC Baseball Championships - Trinity vs. Centre

Trinity University used two seven run innings in beating Centre 16-0 in eight innings to earn a berth in the SCAC Championship game against undefeated Hendrix College. The win advanced the Tigers to its 14th SCAC Championship game in the 18-year history of the conference tournament. Trinity first baseman Evan Jones led the Tigers as he finished 1-for-3 with two RBI, walked twice and scored two runs. With his hit, Jones tied an SCAC tournament record with 12 hits. That feat was matched by four players and was last achieved by Millsaps' Hunter Owen in last year's tournament. Trinity second baseman Jeff Claydon was 2-for-3 and drove in four in the win.

2009 SCAC Baseball Championships - Centre vs. DePauw

The Centre College Colonels staved off elimination in the second game of day three of the 2009 SCAC Baseball Championship with a 9-7 win over division rival DePauw University. DePauw senior Justin Weirner, who already broke the school career stolen bases record along with the SCAC career stolen bases record, added yet one more record to his list of accomplishments. He set a new conference mark with six stolen bases in the SCAC Tournament. After DePauw scored four runs in the top of the first the Colonels responded by scoring five in the bottom of the first and scored 10 unanswered runs and held on for an 11-9 win over the Tigers. Centre's Brandon Rosen led the way for the Colonels batting 4-for-5 with three RBI and a home run. Aaron Herbert picked up the win for Centre tossing six innings and striking out two.

2009 SCAC Softball Championships - Rhodes vs. Hendrix

Rhodes capped off its marathon day of softball with a 4-1 win against Hendrix advancing to the championship game tomorrow at 11 AM CST against DePauw.

Rhodes played solid defense all day long allowing just one run in three games today with three different starting pitchers, Sara Bowen, Chelsea Peters and Cindy Bitters. The Lynx used a three run third inning combined with seven hits and just one error to know off Hendrix tonight.

Hendrix who won two games yesterday came up short today losing to DePauw in the winners bracket semi-final before losing to Rhodes tonight. Hendrix finishes its season with a 22-20 record nine more wins than it recorded a year ago.

With the win Rhodes adds to its most wins in a season (29) in school history and will have a chance for two more tomorrow as the Lynx will have to defeat DePauw twice in order to be named 2009 SCAC Softball Champion.
