Southwestern Slides Past DePauw 69-62 to Advance to Semifinal Round

The West's No. 3 seeded Southwestern University Pirates jumped out to a 39-31 halftime lead en route to a 69-62 SCAC Tournament quarterfinal win over the East's second seeded DePauw University Tigers.

The Pirates built up a 14 point lead with 5:00 minutes left in the second half only to see DePauw senior guard Mike Moore and his Tigers rally to cut the deficit to 64-62 with just under a minute left. That's when Southwestern junior guard Zach Bergstrom made a three-pointer to increase the Pirates lead to five were they hung on for the win.

With the win Southwestern advances to the semifinal round tomorrow against Trinity at 5 pm in Grove Gymnasium.

DePauw Top Tournament Host Hendrix 70-52

The three time defending SCAC champion DePauw University hit the court for the second game in the 2009 SCAC Tournament and picked up the win 70-52 of Hendrix College.

The Tigers pressured the ball from the start forcing eight Hendrix turnovers in the first ten minutes holding the Warriors to just three field goals in that time jumping out to a 17-5 lead.

DePauw shuffled players in and out all night and received a huge help from its bench out scoring the Warriors 36 to 11. Katie Aldrich led the Tigers off the bench with 12 points and 6 rebounds.

The Tigers were led tonight by senior Andrea Travelstead whp posted 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Christina Byler led all scorers in the contest with 21 points and 9 rebounds in the losing effort for the Warriors. With the loss Hendrix ends its season with a record of 14-12.

DePauw improves to 22-4 and advances to the semifinal game against Trinity University tomorrow afternoon at 1 pm in Grove Gymnasium on teh campus of Hendrix College.

Trinty Advances to SCAC Semifinals in OT Thriller Against Sewanee

Trailing by one with 7.1 seconds left in overtime of its SCAC Quarterfinal game between Sewanee, Trinity's B.J. Moon drove the length of the court and converted a lay-up as time expired giving Trinity a 53-52 win and berth in the semifinals.

Trinity, the No. 1 seed from the West trailed by four with just 16 second remaining in overtime. The SCAC's Jeff DeBaldo caught up with Moon, Trinity head coach Pat Cunningham and Sewanee head coach Bubba Smith after the game.

Trinity Women Advance to SCAC Semi-Final Round After 81-60 Win Against Rhodes

The Trinity University Tigers lead by Danielle Hubenak's 22 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists cruised passed Rhodes College 81-60 in the opening quarterfinal match of the 2009 SCAC Women's Basketball Tournament.

The Tigers forced 13 first half turnovers with a high tempo full court pressure leading to a number of easy bucket opportunities. At the half the score was Trinity 33 Rhodes 24.

Trinity was able to dominate the boards in the second half 23-12 allowing for a number of second chance points out scoring Rhodes 16-5 in that category. Krista Prato Matthews of Trinity had 14 rebounds to go along with 19 points in the winning effort.

Rhodes was paced by freshman Jenilee Pate with 12 points in a losing effort. Rhodes ends it season with an overall record of 13-13.

With the win Trinity (19-7) advances to the semifinal round tomorrow afternoon at 1pm at Grove Gymnasium and will face the winner of the DePauw Hendrix quarterfinal game this afternoon.

This week we turn our attention to the 2009 SCAC Basketball Tournament held at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. We will take a look at the way the seedings turned out as well talk about each quarterfinal match-up.

DePauw Men Win 2009 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships; Fifth Straight for the Tigers

DePauw totaled 916 points and captured its fifth straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and seventh in its 11 years of competition. Trinity was second with 769 points and Centre was third with 708.

DePauw's John Cook was named the SCAC Male Swimmer of the Meet after taking home wins in the 50, 100 and 200 free events and notching NCAA automatic standards in each. The honor was the fourth for a DePauw swimmer in the last five years.

DePauw's head coach Adam Cohen had the opportunity to reflect on the meet as well as talk about the road ahead.

Trinity Claims Sixth Straight SCAC Women's Swimming and Diving Title

The Trinity University Tigers women won their sixth consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday.

The Tigers won the meet with 865 points, outdistancing runner-up Centre College, with 789. Trinity has captured nine team titles overall.

Trinity's men finished as runners-up, with a score of 769. DePauw won the men's championship, scoring 916 points.

Sophomore Haley Emerick of Portland, Texas (Gregory-Portland), was named SCAC Female Diver of the Meet for the second straight year. Emerick set SCAC records in winning the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.

Head coach John Ryan had a chance to talk about the teams performance after the meet.

Cooked to Perfection; DePauw's John Cook named 2009 SCAC Men's Swimmer of the Meet

John Cook a junior swimmer from DePauw University was named the 2009 men's swimmer of the meet. Cook who won the 50-yard, 100-yard and 200-yard freestyles all fast enough to set new SCAC records and national "a" cut times is a native of Leawood, Kansas.

Cook also anhcored the winning 200-yard, 400-yard and the 800-yard freestyle relay teams that all set new SCAC records. The All-American a year before had a chacne to talk about his performacne at the 2009 Championships.

Angel in the Water; Meredith Angel 2009 SCAC Women's Swimmer of the Meet

Winner of three individual events, setting three SCAC Championships records and posting two national "A" cut times Meredith Angel was named this years 2009 SCAC Women's Swimmer of the Meet. A Centre College junior, Angel was also apart of four other record setting Centre relay teams including the 200-yard free, 400-yard IM, 200-yard IM and 400-yard relay.

The Kentucky native, Angel either set or was a part of a relay that set a total of seven SCAC records over the course of the meet. The first ever SCAC swimmer of the meet from Centre, Meredith was able to reflect and talk about what an unbelievable week she had.

DePauw Sprints to the Men's 400-Yard Freestyle Relay Title

In the final event of the SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships DePauw closed the 2009 chapter much the same way it began by posting a new SCAC record. This time it was in the men's 400-yard free relay by the team of Josh Baugh, Steve Klabak, John Montgomey and John Cook in a time of 3:03.06.

The Tigers who take great pride in their sprint program have now won the 400-yard free realy five consecutive years in a row. In fact not only did they set the SCAC record but they also posted the fourth fastest 400-yard free relay time in division three this year.

After the meet, the realy team had an oppertunity to talk about the final record setting time of the championships.
