DePauw Tips Austin College; Advances to Second Straight Semi-Final

DePauw University (18-8, 12-4 SCAC) overcame a four point halftime deficit and withstood an Austin College rally late in the second half and advanced to the SCAC semifinals with a 61-56 win Friday afternoon.

Trailing 59-56 with 6.2 seconds left in the game, Austin College had a chance to tie the game. The No. 3 West seed Kangaroos inbounded the ball from underneath its own hoop and had a potential 3-on-2 break away only to be fouled on the inbounds pass. Ransom Okpala missed the ensuing free throw and DePaw's Steve Lemasters grabbed the rebound and iced the game with a pair of free throws.

The Kangaroos (12-14, 7-9 SCAC) shot just under 43 percent in the first half in jumping out to a 30-26 lead. Austin College was led by Walter Phillips' 14 points on 4-for-9 shooting. Also scoring in double-figures for the Kangaroos was Scott Straley who chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.

DePauw's Michael Wilkison scored a team-high 14 points while teammate Tommy Weakley added 11 points. Wilkison added five assits to go along with four rebounds. Senior Ryan Sever nearly tallied a double-double as he scored eight points and grabbed a team high 10 rebounds, including a crucial offensive rebound with under 10 seconds to play and his team clinging to a 58-56 lead.

DePauw advances to the SCAC semifinals on Saturday, February 26. The Tigers square off against No. 1 West seed Trinity, who beat Rhodes 62-42 earlier in the day. The Tigers will make its second straight appearance in the SCAC semifinals and the program's fifth semifinal appearance since 2003.

Southwestern Women Clip Centre 84-70 for First SCAC Tournament Win in School History

Southwestern used a lights our performance from beyond the arc, 11-for-22, one three point made FG shy of tying the SCAC Tournament record for made 3s in a game to defeat Centre 84-70 in the second women's quarterfinal match-up of the day.

Katelyn Bartell, Shae Seagraves and Reilly Robinson each scored 20 points for the Pirates who shoot 43.9% (25-for-57) from the field. Seagraves also chipped in with eight rebounds a steal and an assist. Southwestern took 25 trips to the free throw line connecting on 23 of them including 19-for-21 in the second half.

Maggie Prewitt led the Colonels in a losing effort with 21 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals. Centre, who had advanced to last years championship game, falls to 17-9 on the year with the loss.

With the win, Southwestern improves to 17-9 on the season and a semi-final match-up with Hendrix. In the regular season Hendrix defeated Southwestern twice most recently back on February 4th 75-59.

Trinity Knocks off Rhodes 62-42 Advancing to Men's Semis

The West's top seed, Trinity University, used a stifling defensive effort in limiting Rhodes College to just 11 first half points and a 62-42 win in the opening game of the 2011 SCAC Men's Basketball tournament.

With the game tied at 9-9, Trinity went on a 26-2 run to take a commanding 35-11 halftime lead. Rhodes, the No. 4 seed out of the East, went over 13 minutes without a basket as the Lynx shot just 16.7 percent (4-of-24) in the first half.

The Tigers used both a 3-2 zone and 2-3 zone defensively against Rhodes (7-18, 3-13 SCAC) in limiting the Lynx. Rhodes sophomore guard Andrew Galow shot just 2-for-10 and scored six points. Rhodes shot just over 43 percent in the second half to finish 17-of-54 (31.5 percent) for the game.

In the second half Trinity (16-10, 11-5 SCAC) led 53-21 with 9:41 before earning the 20 point win. The Tigers used a balance scoring effort as Kitzinger was the only Tiger to score in double-figures. Senior forward Luke Caldarera (eight points) was one of six Tigers to score four or more points. Zach Lambert also score eight points for Trinity.

With the win, Trinity advances to the SCAC semifinals on Saturday, February 26. The Tigers take on the winner of the DePauw (No. 2 East) and Austin College (No. 3 West) quarterfinal matchup. Trinity will make its fifth straight appearance in the SCAC semifinals and the program's eighth semifinal appearance since 2003.

Hendrix Tops Oglethorpe 80-57 Advancing to the Women's Semi-Final Round

Hendrix junior guard Samantha Devlin led all scorers with 21 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists as the Warriors knocked off Oglethorpe University 80-57 in today's first game of the SCAC Tournament.

The Warriors used a 45 to 24 rebounding edge to advance to their second s Petrels traight SCAC semi-final round. Senior Christina Byler added 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals as four Warriors were in double figures on the afternoon.

Katie Weeks paced the Stormy Petrels with 11 points and three rebounds in the losing effort. Oglethorpe closes out the season with a 6-10.

Hendrix improves to 16-10 on the season and will face the winner of #2 east seed Centre and #3 west seed Southwestern tomorrow at 1 PM CST from the Hanger Dome on the campus of Millsaps College.

2011 - SCAC Women's Lacrosse Media Days - Sewanee

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference office will conduct its first annual Women's Lacrosse "media days" event beginning Tuesday, February 22.

Day four features a sit down with head coach Michele Dombrowski and seniors Allison Bland and Carly Grimm of Sewanee.

Dombrowski enters her 4th season as the head coach of the Purple Tigers. Last year Stuart guided Sewanee to a record of 12-3 as they head into the inaugural season of SCAC Women's Lacrosse.

Bland enters her senior season after an incredible junior season posting 27 goals and 23 assists. Fellow senior Carly Grimm returns after a junior year that saw her post 34 goals and six assists.

2011 - SCAC Men's Lacrosse Media Days - Southwestern

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference office will conduct its first annual Men's Lacrosse "media days" event beginning Tuesday, February 22.

Day four features a sit down with head coach Joe Ernst and senior midfielder Luther Faulk of Southwestern.

Ernst guides the Pirates into the second year of SCAC conference play. Last year Ernst and the Pirates posted a record of 1-11, 1-3 in conference play finishing fourth in the inaugural season of SCAC Lacrosse.

Faulk enters his senior year after posting four goals and six assists as a junior.

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference office will conduct its first annual Men's Lacrosse "media days" event beginning Tuesday, February 22.

Day four features a sit down with head coach Marty Watters and senior midfielder Travis Brannon of Sewanee.

Waters guides the Purple Tigers into the second year of SCAC conference play. Last year Waters and the Purple Tigers posted a record of 4-10, 2-2 in conference play finishing third in the inaugural season of SCAC Lacrosse.

Brannon enters his senior season after posting two goals as a junior and will anchor the midfield as a captain for the Purple Tigers.

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference office will conduct its first annual Women's Lacrosse "media days" event beginning Tuesday, February 22.

Day two features a sit down with head coach Susan Stuart and junior midfielder Grace Maloney of Colorado College.

Stuart enters her 16th season as the head coach of the CC Tigers. Last year Stuart guided Colorado College to a record of 7-5 as they head into the inaugural season of SCAC Women's Lacrosse.

Maloney enters her junior season as one of the top returning scorers from a season ago. As a sophomore Maloney recorded 10 goals and one assist.

2011 - SCAC Men's Lacrosse Media Days - Hendrix

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference office will conduct its first annual Men's Lacrosse "media days" event beginning Tuesday, February 22.

Day two features a sit down with head coach Curt Foxx and senior defender J.D. Recobs of Hendrix.

Foxx takes over the Warriors in his first year as head coach. Foxx takes over a program that posted a record of 0-13 in inaugural season of SCAC Men's Lacrosse play.

Recobs returns for his senior year after anchoring a defense that held opponents to a .535 shots on goal percentage. Recobs also chipped in on the offensive with an assist.
