Southwestern Women Clip Centre 84-70 for First SCAC Tournament Win in School History

Southwestern used a lights our performance from beyond the arc, 11-for-22, one three point made FG shy of tying the SCAC Tournament record for made 3s in a game to defeat Centre 84-70 in the second women's quarterfinal match-up of the day.

Katelyn Bartell, Shae Seagraves and Reilly Robinson each scored 20 points for the Pirates who shoot 43.9% (25-for-57) from the field. Seagraves also chipped in with eight rebounds a steal and an assist. Southwestern took 25 trips to the free throw line connecting on 23 of them including 19-for-21 in the second half.

Maggie Prewitt led the Colonels in a losing effort with 21 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals. Centre, who had advanced to last years championship game, falls to 17-9 on the year with the loss.

With the win, Southwestern improves to 17-9 on the season and a semi-final match-up with Hendrix. In the regular season Hendrix defeated Southwestern twice most recently back on February 4th 75-59.

2010 - SCAC Basketball Media Days - Centre

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference office will conduct its first annual basketball "media days" event beginning Monday, November 15.

Day one features a sit down with both head coaches at Centre Wendie Austin-Robinson and Greg Mason along with senior guard Amanda Stovall and senior center Alex Lloyd.

Centre, 18-9 (11-5) last year, embarks on the 2010-11 season as the two time defending SCAC champions. The Colonels led the SCAC a year ago in scoring defense holding opponents to just 56.7 points per game. Now in his 12th season at the helm Greg Mason is looking to lead his team to a third straight SCAC title for just the second time in league history (Trinity 2002-03 - 2004-05). SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year Alex Lloyd returns for the Colonels after averaging 7.3 points and 9.7 rebounds during his junior year.

Following another outstanding season the Centre women’s basketball team will look to continue its recent success in the 2010-2011 season. The Colonels posted their first consecutive winning seasons since 1999-2000 and 2000-2001, and also recorded their most wins in a season since the 2000-2001, finishing with a 19-8 overall and record and 12-4 mark in the SCAC. Senior Amanda Stovall who averaged 7.8 points and 3.3 rebounds her junior year returns to help lead this Colonels squad under head coach Wendie Austin-Robinson.

DePauw DaChamps; Ninth SCAC Title for Tigers in a 63-37 Victory of Centre

The 14th-ranked DePauw University Tigers wont their ninth Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship, with a 60-37 win in the championship game over the Centre College Colonels.

The Tigers were led by Emily Marshall's double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds while teammate Jenna Fernandez fell one rebound shy of a double-double, with 10 points and nine rebounds. Other Tigers scoring in double-figures included Brooke Osborne (12) and Kate Walker (11).

Centre was paced by Chelsea Goodman's 11 points and three assists. DePauw limited Centre to 22.7 percent shooting (10-for-44) including 18.2 percent (4-for-22) in the second half.

Maggie Prewitt, the Colonels' leading scorer, at 17 points per game and who had averaged 20 points per game during the tournament, was held scoreless for the first time since Feb. 28, 2009 and just for the second time of her career.

All-Tournament team honors went to Hendrix College's Christina Byler, Centre's Goodman and the DePauw trio of Osborne, Marshall and Fernandez (MVP).

First Time for Everything; Centre defeats Hendrix 86-77 to Advance to First SCAC Tournament Title Game

The Centre College women advanced to their first-ever SCAC Tournament championship game after Saturday's 86-77 victory over Hendrix College at the Hanger Dome on the campus of Millsaps College.

The Colonels (19-7) will face DePauw University in tomorrow's title game. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT with the winner advancing to the NCAA Tournament.

Centre had four players in double figures, led by Lauren huter who posted a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds. The sophomore hit on 10-of-15 shots as the Colonels sank 53.7% of their attempts from the field - including a red-hot 65.4% in the second half.

Chelsea Benham had 18 points off the bench and Maggie Prewitt and Chelsea Goodman chipped in with 16 and 14 points respectively. Prewitt added six assists and four steals.

Hendrix, which ends its season witha 20-5 mark, was led by Christina Byler who pored in a game-high 30 points and nine rebounds.

In a very physical game, where 46 total fouls were called both teams spent significant time at the charity stripe. Centre sank 26-of-36 of its attempts (72.2%) while Hendrix made 22-of-29 (75.9%) from the line.

Centre takes Advantage of Second Opportunity Defeating Trinity 80-65

Maggie Prewitt poured in a game-high 24 points and also added eight rebounds, six steals and four assists as Centre College outscored Trinity University 46-31 in the second half to pull away to an 80-65 victory in Friday's final quarterfinal matchup of the evening at Belhaven University.

The Colonels (18-7) advance to the semifinals for the second consecutive year and will take on Hendrix College, which earned its final four spot with a 73-52 victory over Oglethorpe.

Centre, which had lost to Trinity, 70-60, in the two team's only regular-season meeting, turned the table on the Tigers this time - largely by forcing 24 turnovers which the Colonels converted into 23 points.

Chelsea Goodman added 19 points and six rebounds for the Colonels and Chelsea Benham chipped in with 15 points and five steals off the bench.

Trinity, which ends its season with a 17-9 mark, was led by the double-double effort of Kelsey Goodell, who had 23 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for the Tigers. No other Trinity player scored in double-figures, although Abby Dietert did pull down 11 rebounds.

The Colonels will face another team that defeated them earlier in the year on Saturday as Hendrix earned a 64-54 victory over Centre back on Jan. 17.

SCAC Women's Basketball Podcast - Week Eight

Centre and DePauw both picked up a pair of road victories over the weekend defeating Austin and Colorado Colleges respectively. With the wins, both the Colonels and Tigers clinched their spots at the 2010 SCAC Basketball Tournament in Jackson, Mississippi. Centre is now riding a three game winning streak while DePauw pushed their streak to a league high 13.

Hendrix's Christina Byler was named this week's SCAC Co-POTW. Byler led the Warriors to a pair of SCAC wins this weekend averaging 20 points and 17 rebounds per contest. Byler went off in Hendrix’s 83-66 win over Sewanee on Sunday with a season high 28 points and 25 rebounds. She set a new Hendrix single-game record with 25 boards and was just three shy of tying the SCAC’s single-game mark set by Jennifer Warren of Trinity (vs. Austin on 12/7/94).
