Oglethorpe Storms its way to Third Staright SCAC Final
A starting five made up of all seniors was not to be denied today, with Oglethorpe defeating Centre 71-51 in the second of four games on semifinal Saturday at the 2009 SCAC Tournament.
The Petrels jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished. Tied at 2-2, Oglethorpe opened up a lead that got as big as 18 points with eight minutes left in the half before Centre cut the lead to 12 by intermission. A veteran group, Oglethorpe used 19 assists on 26 field goals in the game to pick up the win 71-51.
Centre was paced by junior guard Chelsea Goodman with 15 points in a losing effort. With her performance tonight, Goodman became just the 7th player in Centre history to clip the 1,000 point career scoring mark. The loss drops Centre to 18-9 on what has been the most sucessful season the Colonels have seen since the 2000-01 season. Head coach Wendie Austin-Robinson was named the 2009 SCAC coach of the year at half time of today's game, the third coach in Centre women's basketball history to recieve such an honor.
For the second night in a row Tina Grace led the Petrels in scoring with 22 points to go along with 3 assists. Anna Findley chipped in a 17 point, 8 rebound and 4 assist effort on the evening. With the win Oglethorpe improves to 24-3 on the season and advances to the SCAC championship game tomorrow against Trinity University at noon from Gorve Gymnasium on the campus of Hendrix College. Oglethorpe and Trinity met earlier in the season with the Tigers of Trinity picking up the win 85-72 in San Antonio. Oglethorpe who has played in the previous two SCAC championship games is seeking its first ever women's SCAC Championship in school history.
After the game SCACs Russell Kramer had a chacne to catch up with Centre head coach Wendie Austin-Robinson and Oglethorpe seniors Anna Findley and Tina Grace.
